If you struggle with underarm sweating that soaks through your clothes and makes you self-conscious, you have several treatment options. If you have excessive underarm sweating, treatments include Botox® and miraDry®. While both can control sweat, many people prefer miraDry® for several reasons.
What is Hyperhidrosis?
We all sweat from the underarm area, but some people have constant, excessive sweating even if they are not overheated or stressed. Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that can be treated with several different methods. It occurs when the nerves that control the sweat glands signal them too often, making them produce more sweat. Treatments can interrupt nerve signals or disrupt the sweat glands themselves.
miraDry® vs. Botox®: What Treatment is Better for Hyperhidrosis?
You may wonder whether miraDry® or Botox® would make a better choice to control your hyperhidrosis. Botox® has helped many people manage this condition, but you must repeat the treatment several times a year to maintain your results. In contrast, miraDry stops sweating indefinitely, and you may only need a single treatment.
Botox® works for hyperhidrosis by attaching to the nerves that signal your sweat glands. It stops the signals from these nerves so that your sweat glands do not receive excessive orders to make sweat. Botox® will lose its hold on these nerves after a few months. miraDry® works on the sweat glands, deactivating them for long-lasting results.
How Does miraDry® Work for Hyperhidrosis?
Dr. Kathleen Brenman uses a handheld applicator to direct energy into the skin. This energy targets the sweat glands and deactivates them using heat. After this treatment, the treated sweat glands can no longer produce sweat.
miraDry® controls sweat for over 90% of treated individuals. Most also saw an 80% decrease in underarm odor. We use a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable during the treatment, which takes about an hour. Most people only need one treatment, but some may benefit from another session.
MiraDry® and Botox® Consultations Available
How Much Does miraDry® Cost?
Costs for a treatment like miraDry® vary depending on where you live and which provider you choose. At The Pennsylvania Centre for Plastic Surgery, you can expect your miraDry® treatment to cost about $1995. If you need a repeat treatment, it will cost about half as much. This is more than the cost of a Botox® treatment, but repeating Botox® regularly for years will cost you more over time.
Is There Any Downtime With miraDry® or Botox®?
Both treatments allow you to return to your usual activities immediately. If you have miraDry®, you can expect some swelling that will resolve within a few days. People who have Botox® may notice minor bruising or sensitivity in the injection area. Follow your provider’s directions about post-treatment care.
